I have had 2 opportunities in the last 6 months to help these wonderful birds from trouble. About 4 months ago one had been attacked by a hawk that nests near my work. She was laying on the cold cement in shock and bleeding. I scooped her up and set her gently down next to a tree and worried about her all day. I went to check on her through out the day and she had worked her way slowly up the tree to rest. By the end of the day she was no longer there.
Then today I went on my break to read out on the patio at work and I hear rustling in the ground cover and leaves. I turned around to discover yet another red bellied woodpecker in need of some help. She had wondered her way between the inside and outside doors so I led her out so she could be outside again. I think something might have been wrong with her wing because she didnt fly but hopped around instead. She eventually made her away around and back to me before I left to go back inside.
